Overwolf version 0.37.218 released!

Greetings!

In this release we’ve focused on upgrading some of our existing features. The first one is our chat window. We’ve added web link support and incoming message typing indication (can you find the hidden Easter Egg there?!) Our next upgrade is in the browser, a browsing history drop down menu was added, to enhance your in-game surfing habits.

And now for the breaking news – Overwolf now supports Minecraft! Yay! The reason it took us a while, is because Minecraft works on a different graphic engine that is called OpenGL. We basically had to support this new graphic engine to be able to support Minecraft…

So now, you can take screenshots, record videos and use all our features inside Minecraft! We’ve also published a very nice MC friends-list app in collaboration with Enjin! Can’t wait to see your cool MC videos in our forums!

Oh, some users requested a Google+ web app, so we’ve added this as well. That’s a big Plus! (hmmm…), last but not least we’ve reassembled the Steam chat parts and it’s now functional again. And as always we fixed some bugs.

In our next update, as promised, you’re going to see one of the most amazing features we’ve launched so far, the in-game music controller! Here’s a small tease of how it’s going to look like:

Overwolf version 0.34.203 released!

Greetings beloved gamers!

I don’t think it’s even possible to describe the excitement in Overwolf’s premises about this version. A huge in-house project is going to be launched and hopefully change the world of gaming as we know it. The barriers for developing in-game applications have been breached!

Overwolf’s team has worked extremely hard to introduce the In-game Appstore!

Yeah guys, you can all now develop and publish in-game apps for the masses! It’s fast, easy and extremely fun. You don’t have to be a superb c++ ninja (although this might be an advantage…), just a few HTMLs, some JavaScript and a nice CSS touch and voila! You’ve got yourself your own in-game app!

For more information on how it’s done, visit our developers website and feel free to ask us questions in the developers forum.

In-game Appstore

As part of this, we’ve added the “My Apps” area where you can finally not only customize Overwolf dock but also remove useless apps!

In-game Appstore

So, what else is new?

  1. As part of the in-game Appstore, we’ve already added 5 new apps which are available to install: Calculator, Notepad, IRC Webapp chat, 8Tracks and Grooveshark. I think their name describes them the best!
  2. A cool Overwolf watermark is now added to your glorious screenshots. You can change its location or disable it in the settings.
  3. You can now share screenshots and videos to the VKontakte social network and the Enjin gaming network.
  4. Enjin chat network is now supported in the Multi-IM app.
  5. “Check for updates” support, you don’t have to guess anymore when a new update is available, just check it out in the general settings page.
  6. And sadly, some bad news, the Steam chat had to be removed for now as they’ve suddenly changed their protocol. We’re working hard to get it back ASAP.
  7. Due to the mass increase in the number of new users, we are receiving tons of support calls and forum posts which help us monitor and fix bugs. So a big kudos for all of you! If you’ve encountered some glitches with Overwolf in the past, please check it out again.

New supported games:

  • Cities XL 2012
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Beta
  • Crusader Kings II
  • Max Payne 3
  • Railworks 3
  • Risen 2
  • Smite Beta

Note that you have to restart Overwolf to get it working, and make sure you are running the latest version 0.34.203…

Overwolf version 0.33.199 released!

Dear audience,

I hope you all enjoyed this crazy gaming month, while using Overwolf of course!

Today we have a great update for you with an amazing new feature that will change the way you play LoL!

The League of Legends Respawn Timers Widget
Stop guessing when one of those bloody creeps are respawning and use our in-game “League of Legends Timers” widget that will help you with those respawn times. Each creep has its own timer. Clicking on it will reset the timer to count down again, so pay attention when a teammate says he killed one! Currently, the widget is only available for “The Summoners Rift”, 5 vs 5 map. BUT if you throw enough stones at our support mail, we’ll add it for the other maps!

So how does it works?

1. When you enter LoL, you’ll get a notification like this on Overwolf main menu, aka “The dock”:
League Of Legends in-game creeps re-spawn timers widget

2. A new widget will be added to the widget bank:
League Of Legends in-game creeps re-spawn timers widget

3. Click on it and follow the instructions provided…
League Of Legends in-game creeps re-spawn timers widget

And some other cool updates:

  1. We’ve added a maximize button at the top of each widget, so you can now maximize its window by double clicking the title bar or by using this weird rectangle button.
  2. Italiano è supportato! Overwolf now speaks Italian!
  3. The music player, which apparently doesn’t work on Windows XP with WMP < 10, now supports these music formats: AAC, AIFF and WAV.
  4. Lots of bugs were fixed, specifically the ones concerning the connection to various IM’s, so please try it out again.

I am glad to announce that we now support these games: Tera, Guild Wars 2 and Dota 2, under certain limitations, please read the game comment carefully. The complete list of the new supported games:

  • Dota 2
  • Fallen Earth
  • Guild wars 2
  • Jagged Alliance: Back in Action
  • Kerbal Space program
  • Knight Online
  • Path of Exile

  • Pokemon World Online
  • Rise of the Dragonian Era AKA R.O.D.E
  • Sol: Exodus

300 Million Gamers Are Going To Be Frustrated When the Windows 8 Tablet Launches

At first, Windows Gamers are going to be extremely happy with Microsoft’s tablet launch. Their excitement will stem from the belief that their games are going to work on Windows 8 Tablets. After all, it’s basic and justified logic, “You know… if the games run on Windows they will also run on a Windows 8 Tablet because it’s the same OS, right?” Like a hungry gold digger discovering his lute is actually fool’s gold, these gamers excitement will quickly wane upon realization this is only partially true. Sure, these games will run on Windows 8 Tablets, but since they were designed to be played with a mouse and a keyboard and not for a touchpad tablet experience – this means users will not be able to go beyond the login screen or play the game. It will be a rude awakening for anyone whose hopes were to take advantage of Windows tablets for serious gaming.

As folks who both love games, play games and enable better gaming experiences, the Overwolf Team felt this is was a serious problem that must be solved. Just before having started development, I received a request from Intel to develop and display that exact ability in the largest and most prestigious gaming conference – GDC 2012. Our team felt that this was a wonderful opportunity to enable great existing games, currently not optimized for tablet, to be translated to the Windows 8 Tablet – and we immediately started development.

Overwolf’s technology was developed under the lead of my business partner, Nir Finkelstein. As Overwolf’s CTO, Nir and the team created an embeddable, rich layer of functionality in games without having to touch or alter the games’ source code – a huge upside for any developer to get access to a new platform without having to spend additional development resources to do so. Prior to this project, our tech team was mainly focused on adding social features such as communication and content creation for social networks, and as a result, positioned Overwolf as the leading market solution from a tech and UX standpoint. Nir kept pushing forward, and I’d hear him in the office pushing ahead, he’d say, “this challenge is a great fit with our current infrastructure. Guys, we can solve this problem and do it quickly”. What resulted was our ability to deliver a live demo for two different game genres in less than a month. I was extremely proud of our achievements, but what dawned upon me clearly, was that we achieved this great milestone due to our robust technology we had developed for more than two years. Without it the execution would have taken a lot longer.

As soon as the team had a working prototype, Overwolf’s Product Manager Alon Rabinovitz started running focus groups to fine-tune the experience. At first it was done with our internal group of employees, and later, moved to serious hard core gamers… the type of gamers for whom gaming is more important than almost anything. I recall a conversation with Alon saying, “These gamers have a ton of brilliant ideas, so we can quickly develop to their requests and iterate one version after the other to find what is most optimal”. As you can imagine, the feedback we received was directly given from people who would utilize the final product, but more importantly, could continue using it as we evolved it to meet their needs. As a result, the product Overwolf showcased at GDC 2012 was extremely well received. This also led to high interest from various Game Industry players who are interested in Overwolf creating new products and services.

It looks like the 300 million gamers are going to be frustrated [very] happy when Windows 8 Tablets at launch, utilizing Overwolf’s solution to play their games on their tablet. After all, how else would you run World of Warcraft on a Windows 8 Tablet…? And if you’re a gamer, you can now enjoy such an immersive game experience on your Windows 8 Tablet and let your mom continue playing Angry Birds on her tablet.

Overwolf version 0.30.183 released!
